To the OP, your choices are pretty much Mac OS 9, Mac OS X (through Tiger - you could coerce Leopard to run on this but it would not be very happy), NetBSD, or one of the Linuces that still supports ppc32be. PPC BeOS has never run on a G4, and would probably not even start up. If it's a beige Mac with a 603 or 604 and a PCI bus, it has a good chance of working. No one has ever come up with which models could and a means to do so.ĪFAIC, the only PowerPC worth running BeOS on is a BeBox.īut that said, only a minority of Power Macs are compatible, mostly those that were contemporary. Since this predates New World systems, they wouldn't have been able to boot without it. I've seen others say this, but I'm very sceptical because unless those machines had a license from Apple they wouldn't have a Toolbox ROM. It only ran on the few IBM workstations compatible with it and the PowerPC ThinkPads. NT 4.0 will not run on Power Mac hardware.

Tell me, what you think about me putting Windows NT 4.0 on this beast? According to Wikipedia that was the last Windows to run on a PowerPC processor. It seems not many people are doing this, cause I looked on Ebay and all the other Mac G4 towers either have no hard drive, or are running some version of OSX. Though I was thinking on making this baby unique by turning it into a retro Hackintosh.

I read that G4 models like this one, which was made in 2000, can run Mac OSX up to like OSX Tiger. Tell you the truth, I don't have much experience on Macs to begin with, though I had a Powerbook in highschool before I was a PC tech. I haven't checked to see what cpu speed is under the hood. AFAIK it has 1GB of ram, an ATI video card, and a DVD-RW as upgrade parts. I don't know what model it is, as I just brought it home from the recycling center.
